Galloway Forest: Rock

Admittedly this isn't a recognisable cultural symbol representing Scotland - like a kilt or bagpipes - but it is a very typical dour & resilient image of the moody depths of classic pine forest which covers a great deal of this land; likewise, the outcropping of these natural granite monuments in unlikely settings (eg the middle of the forest) is also an idiosyncratic feature of the celtic landscape: indeed, just a few hundred yards away from this very spot is a similar boulder known as "Bruce's Stone", named after Robert the Bruce, a legendary Scots leader & warrior, who rested his army in this region after fighting the English - who else?!?
